He spent eleven years learning classical violin. During that time he attended Arizona State University on a music scholarship. It was there his professors repeatedly told him he wasn’t good enough to be a performer, something that at the time devastated him. However, it was his first violin teacher, Olea Kienke, who gave him the inspiration to believe in himself and with her inspiration he went on to study with the great violin master Paul Rolland at the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana. For eleven years Arvel Bird toured with Glen Campbell, Clay Walker, Louise Mandrell, Tom T. Hall, Ray Price and Loretta Lynn. Since launching his own career in 2001 he has released twelve albums and one DVD with seven of his albums nominated or winning awards in a variety of categories. In 2007 he was voted “Artist of the Year” by the Native American Music Awards, won “Best Instrumental” by the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, “Best Native American Performer”, “Best Native American Performing Group” for Arvel Bird and One Nation, “Best Native American Album and is a four time Indiana State Fair Fiddle champion. He has recorded and collaborated with Peter Kater, William Eaton, Mary Redhouse, Will Clipman, Joesph Firecrow, Jeff Bell, Irene Bedard and others.
